FAQ
What is massage therapy?
Massage therapy utilizes manual manipulations of the soft tissues and joints within the body to assess and treat them. These structures can include (but are not limited to) skin, muscles, tendons, fascia, bones, ligaments, and nerves. Some of the techniques that may be used during treatment are Swedish massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, joint mobilizations, and stretching.
Who can benefit?
Everyone! Massage therapy can be a useful tool whether you're looking to prevent or rehabilitate an injury, increase range of motion, improve quality of life by gaining more functional movement, manage stress, decrease pain, or promote wellbeing during pregnancy and postpartum.
What does a treatment session include?
Your appointments will include a discussion about your primary concern, an assessment (if indicated), hands-on massage therapy, and homecare if appropriate. Subsequent treatments (for the same concern) will generally involve less discussion and assessment with more time dedicated to the hands-on treatment portion.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that you can move in. It can be helpful to wear shorts, leggings, and/or strappy tops depending on which area of the body you are looking to have assessed (especially if it's your first appointment for a particular concern).
Do I need a referral?
You do not need a referral from a doctor to receive massage therapy, however some extended health providers require one for coverage. Check with your extended health plan.
Do you offer direct billing?
Yes, I can direct-bill to most major insurance providers including Pacific Blue Cross, Canada Life, Sun Life, Green Shield, ICBC, MSP, and Medavie.
Please note: I can NOT direct-bill for last-minute cancellations or missed appointments.
What does MSP cover?
If you qualify for premium assistance from the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP), they'll cover $23 per treatment for up to 10 treatments per year (combined between RMT, physiotherapy, and Chiropractic). I offer a subsidized rate for the remaining treatment fee (see my Jane booking site for more details).
